Se ha usado la ingenier\u00eda gen\u00e9tica para modificar la lignina, una parte sustancial de la pared celular de la mayor\u00eda de las plantas que es un impedimento para el procesamiento de pulpa, papel, y la\u00a0<strong>producci\u00f3n de biocombustibles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>La eliminaci\u00f3n de la lignina es un proceso que necesita\u00a0<strong>cantidades significativas de productos qu\u00edmicos y de energ\u00eda<\/strong>\u00a0y provoca la creaci\u00f3n de muchos residuos. El equipo de investigadores, dirigido por Shawn Mansfield, ha modificado la lignina para que sea m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil de romper sin da\u00f1ar al arbol ni la calidad de la materia prima.<\/p>\n<p>Los trabajos previos para abordar este problema dieron lugar a \u00e1rboles que se atrofiaban en el crecimiento o que eran altamente sensibles a fuerzas naturales como el viento, la nieve, las plagas o los pat\u00f3genos.
